The Carley Consult Grand Prix Challenge was finally completed yesterday. The original plan had been for Jim Carley to run two half marathons around two grand prix circuits, but February’s Brands Hatch race was called off due to snow, and Jim was unable to run at Silverstone in March due to a stomach virus. Instead, Jim competed in the Retford Half Marathon, achieving a time of 1 hour 54 minutes and followed that yesterday by competing in the Humber Bridge Half Marathon. In contrast to February’s snow, the temperatures yesterday were over 20° centigrade, with blue sunny skies – hardly ideal for running 13 miles. Jim, nevertheless, made it home in 2 hours 4 minutes. The Humber Bridge is a spectacular landmark to run over (and back), and provided an iconic backdrop for a very memorable race. We’d like to thank everyone who has sponsored the campaign in helping us raise £1,588 for Bassetlaw Hospice in Retford. We were delighted in particular with all the support from within the employment and skills sector, including sponsors from A4e, 3aa, Armstrong Learning, Qdos, ESG, Avanta, The FourstaR Group, Tilad, Paragon, Shaw Trust, Angus Knight, Employment Opportunities for People with Disabilities, ReMIT, and BEST. The challenge now is to come up with an even better fundraising campaign for 2010.
